Sandia Crest
Being
from Colorado one thing that is obvious is that I am enamored with mountains.
There is something so peaceful about staring into them, enjoying the scenery,
and the best part is escaping to them. Unfortunately, the last few years I
lived there it became more difficult to go. Whether it was the crowds, the
traffic, or reservation systems, the planning to summit mountains was a
logistical nightmare, and something I really came to miss. So, moving down here
it was a huge relief not only how visible the Sandia was from everywhere around
the city, but how easy it was to get to. The only thing left was to make the
drive and go to the top of it.
Impulsively
on a Saturday morning it felt like a good day to do it, so after corralling the
dog into the car the journey began. The drive itself was very relaxing and was
very reminiscent of going to the mountains in Colorado. After turning at the
sign for the Sandia Crest you find yourself driving through switchbacks going
around the mountain. Surrounded by pine trees, and the last remnants of snow of
the season the air was crisp, and the excitement to get to the top built. As I
neared the top the parking lot was very spacious, and it was time to begin
exploring.
Around
the main parking lot at the crest are several benches for looking out on the
views, as well as trailheads to go hiking. I first decided to head up a small
flight of stairs to the viewing deck, and the views were nothing short of
breathtaking. On one side you have perfect mountain scenery, including pine
trees, and various shades of mountain tops. But turn around and go to the other
side and you will find yourself looking down on Albuquerque. Words can’t
describe it being on a mountain top looking down in the valley that is your
hometown. It just goes to show how close nature is to the city, and how lucky I
am to have such great scenery all around me.
After
taking in a view that great it was time to explore and check out some of the
various hiking trails within the park. Each trailhead has its own little parking
lot, and exploring the crest becomes a choose your own adventure day. The 10k
Trail provided great scenery, and a slightly strenuous hike that included a
couple wildlife sightings. In addition, the Ellis Trail was also near the ski
lifts. No matter where you go in this park there is something for everybody of
all ages, hikers of all skill levels, families, and out of town guests.
All I
can say about this particular adventure is it was well worth it. Looking back
on it, the scenery alone was worth the drive, and the low cost of admission. As
far as the hiking trails are concerned, I know I only scratched the surface and
have so much more exploring to do. This is a place that would be equally as
great regardless of the season because the scenery, and experiences will always
be changing. I am already looking forward to my next visit, the only thing is I
might need more time to explore all I want to.
