Volcanoes

Image
Since I moved down here one thing I have really enjoyed is being able to reconnect with nature and go hiking again. While there is no substitute for escaping into the mountains and finding a trail sometimes that isn’t always an option. Luckily around Albuquerque the options and places to go hiking are abundant and can be as strenuous as you choose. The other aspect of hiking here that I love is that history is intertwined within these trails. One place I have found myself frequenting since I moved here is not only a great hike, but also give a great glimpse into the history that formed Albuquerque. That’s why when the nature bug bites me, I enjoy visiting the Volcanoes as part of the Petroglyphs.  Now one thing I recently learned is that the volcanoes are known as the three sisters name Ja, Black, and Vulcan. While on this hike you can choose the see all three, or just one as this is a choose your length hike. It can be either 1 mile, 2 miles, or 6 miles. Me personally, I will alwa

Food Trucks

Image
When it comes to the local food scene anywhere there is something about a food truck that is different. Driving to a restaurant you know the destination and what you are seeking. But with a food truck there is an element of surprise. Whether it is pulling up to a brewery and seeing one or stopping when one is parked near the road food trucks will always attract guests with the aromas of what they are cooking. Thankfully after moving down here, it didn’t take me long to discover that New Mexico has a great food truck scene with a variety of options. While there are several more to try here are a couple that have stood out to me so far.  Tikka Spice: I am a big fan of Indian food, so it was a huge relief to find an Indian food truck down here that not only does traditional Indian food, but also some fun fusion dishes. The colorful wrap on the truck, and amazing aromas let you know you have found the right place. For traditional Indian food the Samosas are a must order. The pastry is

Coffee Trucks

If there is one thing I have said before it is worth repeating that I love the options to get a great cup of coffee in the Albuquerque area. Whether it is a brick-and-mortar shop or a traveling truck I will always want to stop and try them or make a note of where they are to come back and try them. On some recent explorations I was lucky enough to drive by two that I haven’t gotten to try yet. After the caffeine buzz wore off from their delicious and unique offerings, I knew I had to write about them.  Latte Corazon: I had seen this small truck drive by me and had heard of them but thankfully one day I was stuck at a red light and saw them parked. So, after deciding to stop I really enjoyed my visit and was glad I made the detour. The menu features all the classic coffee shop menu items, but also some so unique I have never seen them before. The syrup flavors are very original and include Mexican vanilla, pecan, and piloncillo in addition to signature drinks like Dirty Horchata an

Route 66 Moriarty

Image
Most people that know me know that I love American history. To learn about the past, and the rich history this country has is nothing short of amazing. However, it is one thing to get to read about historical events, as opposed to getting to visit these historical landmarks in person. Lucky for me that New Mexico is so rich in its history, and one aspect of that really excited me was to visit the Mother Road. Route 66, where all of America was Main Street with iconic hotels, diners, and attractions to make the road trip just as fun as the destination. On a recent trip to Moriarty, I decided it was time to take a little longer to get there, and instead of taking I-40 I got to experience Route 66 for the first time.  After stopping for gas, I instantly knew that I was not at a typical rest stop you would find off a major highway. This was an actual truck stop complete with a sit-down restaurant where guests were enjoying a relaxing, scratch made meal, not rushing to get back on the r

Sierra Blanca

Years ago, when I first visited Albuquerque, I was looking for some local craft beer to bring back home to Colorado and the packaging of a certain beer caught my eye. The beer was Alien Amber which turned out to be a very delicious and refreshing beer. After moving down to New Mexico, I enjoyed the fact that I could once again enjoy this beer, but more importantly visit the brewery that makes it. After some recon and planning the drive to Moriarty was made, and I finally got to visit Sierra Blanca Brewing for the first time.  Driving up the brewery the space is very large, and the front of the building says “Brewery” in large red letters. But walk in, follow the path to the back and you will find a mural and van painted to reflect the alien branding perfectly. Continue following the path and you will find yourself in a massive outdoor space that will make you not want to leave. There are swings sit in, a fountain, and games for all including cornhole, tetherball, bocce ball, and gi
