Volcanoes

Since I moved down here one thing I have really enjoyed is being able to reconnect with nature and go hiking again. While there is no substitute for escaping into the mountains and finding a trail sometimes that isn’t always an option. Luckily around Albuquerque the options and places to go hiking are abundant and can be as strenuous as you choose. The other aspect of hiking here that I love is that history is intertwined within these trails. One place I have found myself frequenting since I moved here is not only a great hike, but also give a great glimpse into the history that formed Albuquerque. That’s why when the nature bug bites me, I enjoy visiting the Volcanoes as part of the Petroglyphs.

Now one thing I recently learned is that the volcanoes are known as the three sisters name Ja, Black, and Vulcan. While on this hike you can choose the see all three, or just one as this is a choose your length hike. It can be either 1 mile, 2 miles, or 6 miles. Me personally, I will always make it to the Black Volcano, but sometimes I enjoy doing the Vulcan loop. But like with all great hikes you must start at the trailhead, and this one leads you straight towards the first volcano.

The first great stopping point is about a half mile in and gives you a breath-taking view of the city. With volcanoes behind you and the Sandia off to the east you find yourself looking down into the valley where Albuquerque lies. It is truly wonderous to see the two main formations that shaped the Rio Grande Valley, and what we know our city to be today. It is also where you learn that the Sandia is still currently rising, while the valley is sinking. After taking more pictures than is necessary it is time to continue forward and onto the Black Volcano.

This is where the hike can become strenuous due to the incline, and the change in terrain with loose rock along the trail. Once you reach the Black Volcano you can either continue towards the Vulcan or you can summit the volcano. Of course, you must summit it though because how often can you say you were on top of a volcano? After this you can either head to the parking lot or continue to see the last of the three sisters. The walk to Vulcan is relatively easy, but once you get to the base it becomes steep to get to the top. Getting to the top is worth it though to see the rock formations and get a different perspective of everything around you. Once you get to the top you circle around and head back towards the parking lot.

Of all the places that there are to hike in and around Albuquerque I have found myself going to the volcanoes multiple times. The trail is approachable, the scenery is amazing, and it is never too crowded. There is no shade so make sure to pack plenty of water, and the terrain gets rough so have appropriate footwear, but I always enjoy my time there. Whether it is a short hike, or the entire thing there is something for everybody on this trail. It is for all skill levels, and a great place to take anyone. As I’ve said I’ve done it plenty of times already and will continue to do it in the future.
