Arroyo Hondo
Nature is everywhere, even when you
least expect to find it. I was reminded of that recently while exploring in
Santa Fe where a multi-use sidewalk took me under the highway and to a
trailhead full of great scenery in all directions. Of all the places I discovered
this behind an outlet mall and running parallel to Cerillos Road. This
impromptu walk led me to the Arroyo Hondo Trail.
While the trail head can take a decent
walk to access, it was about a mile from the outlet malls it will be worth it
in the end. You know you are at the right spot when you see the dinosaur
sculptures nearby. Once at the trailhead you can go either north or south.
People that have read my walking/hiking blogs know I always follow the
mountains so north it was. While this was not a hike, the path was paved the
entire way and the scenery around was beautiful. The flowers were blooming
showing pops of colors along the walkway, the trees were all full of leaves,
and the mountains off in the distance were beautiful to look at the entire
time. It is hard to believe that a little over a mile away is a busy road
because I didn’t hear the traffic. It was a great escape into nature.
After walking north for as long as I
felt I could (eventually the trail does lead into a neighborhood), I decided to
turn around and see what the southern part of the trail offered. A short way
led to a small bridge crossing, and even more gorgeous scenery. Just on the
other side of the bridge was nothing but open space full of grass, tress, and a
different mountain view off in the distance. Either direction you walk in, you
are guaranteed to not be disappointed surrounded by the views you are taking
in.
All I can say after discovering this
place is what a great find. It’s not strenuous, full of switchbacks, the terrain
is smooth unlike most hikes I do, but there is something to be said about
finding a great trail and just walking. There is something so relaxing about
surrounding yourself with nature, and beautiful scenery. I would highly
recommend this trail as a great place to walk for anybody. While there are lots
of other trails, I want to check out this season this will be one I visit
again.
