Sheehan Winery

As much as people know me as a craft beer fan, I also do occasionally enjoy a glass of wine. Also, like with craft beer I prefer to drink local wines. Lucky for me one of the first wineries I tried when I moved down here not only has a great tasting room, but it also grows all their grapes in New Mexico. With vineyards in Corrales, Bosque Farms, and the South Valley, as well as multiple tasting rooms this is as local as it gets for a winery. So when that craving for a glass of red hits, I always crave Sheehan Winery.

I first discovered Sheehan while I was staying in Red River. Their small tasting room offered a great variety of wines, and a patio to take in the scenery. It did not disappoint, and it was very exciting to discover their tasting room while in Old Town. The Old Town tasting room is nothing short of beautiful. It is spacious with bottles everywhere to take home, and of course to taste or enjoy a glass there. There is a upper level for wine club members, and a covered patio outside the entrance to enjoy the fresh air, and scenery of Old Town. The staff is very friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable about the wines offered.

The wine list here is very expansive, and there is sure to be a wine for lovers of all varietals. Whether it is red or white, sweet, dry, heavy, or light. I have not personally tried any of the whites, but in terms of their wine list there are a few I would always go back for and recommend. The first is actually the Cinsault Rose. It is not too sweet, and dry, but very fruity making it perfect for those warmer New Mexico days.

As far as red wines are concerned there are three here, I will drink time and time again. For a lighter red I really enjoy the Sangiovese. It is full of great fruity flavor, and finishes with a subtle spice note. It is not too heavy making it a great easy drinking red wine. The Agliancio is a very unique red. It is a little richer, but has very complex flavors making it a wine like no other. For the bold fan of reds, the Syrah is the one to order. It is as rich in color as it is in flavor. The bold deep flavor makes this a wine to sip and savor, but one of my personal favorites on the entire menu.

With so many wines to choose from making a decision here can be overwhelming. Thankfully they do offer tastings, but from my experience so far you won’t be disappointed. I look forward to going there whenever I am in Old Town, and look forward to sampling more of their wines. This is definitely a hidden gem in Albuquerque, and a great local business I look forward to supporting as long as I live here.
