Corrales Bosque
Since moving down here one of the towns I have absolutely fallen
in love with and myself driving too a lot is Corrales. This is a great small
town that seems to have everything. Just driving through it the scenery
is great. Stopping for a beer at Ex Novo is always on the list. So why would I
be surprised to find a great hike in this town also? Well at the Corrales
Bosque there is just that, and this choose your own adventure hike is a must do
for hikers of all skill levels.
When you first approach it there is no parking lot, instead just park along the road leading up to the gate and walk in. The hike itself is not difficult, and the 7.4-mile loop can be as long or short, and as strenuous as the hiker chooses. Walking in though is an instant escape into nature. Instantly there are trees as far as the eye can see, the canal, and a trail that seems to stretch. Hikers can choose to go right or left upon entrance, and given the direction of the Sandia I chose to go left which was the right decision.
Throughout the course of the hike there are times where you can go down from the top trail into a lower level. Once down there the shade is much cooler, and there are additional detours throughout it to only add to the fun of this hike. This is where the highlight of the day was. On one of the detours, I heard what I thought was water, and I expected to come to a small stream, but I was wrong. Instead, I found myself along the Rio Grande River staring at the Sandia across the way. All I could say to myself was wow, and remind myself how lucky I am to get to see these sights so close to home.
The walk back was just as beautiful being surrounded by trees, hearing the various wildlife off in the distance, and just how peaceful of a hike that it turned out to be. All in all, I ended up hiking about 6 miles that day, but could have done more. I feel like I only scratched the surface of what this bosque has to offer in terms of its scenery. I still have a whole different direction to explore, plus multiple more detours along the way. Also, my first visit here was in autumn when the leaves were yellow and beginning to fall. I am already intrigued to see how this place looks during all the other seasons.
So, would I do it again? Obviously yes, but in the right circumstances. This is a very popular trail, as it is dog friendly, and very family friendly which can mean lots of crowds. I would do it any day during the week, but probably avoid it on weekends, but that is just me personally. The beauty of every aspect makes it a must visit regardless, and one worth checking out when in the Albuquerque area. I had no
regrets about my visit.
