Red River Brewing
As I have previously stated when I first moved down here, I had to
stay in Red River briefly before completing my move. One of the highlights was
finding a local brewery along the main street in this small town. I wasn’t sure
what to expect, but the first time I went, not only did they brew a wide
variety of beers, they also had a decent food menu, and on top of that were
also a distillery that made their own award-winning spirits. So naturally I
frequented a few times, and really came to enjoy trying Red River Brewing and
Distillery, a family-owned business in the northern mountains of New Mexico.
The first takeaway I had about this place was just how large it is, and that they need all the space on a daily basis. Clearly this is not just a tourist brewery, but also a place for the local community to go to. The inside is very warm with wood floors, and views of the brewhouse. But there is a reason this place was named best brewery patio. The patio has another outdoor bar, tables for the largest of groups, firepits to keep you warm in the crisp mountain air, and of course views of the mountains you are surrounded by. But what is a nice patio without a beer to keep you warm?
The beer list offers styles for all kinds of beer drinkers. The Lazy Bear Blonde is easy drinking and refreshing, perfect after a day of exploring Main Street, hiking, or during the season skiing. For a more malty beer the Copper Chair Amber offers a subtle hop profile, and a more malt forward flavor. For the dark beer lovers Midnight Meadows Oatmeal Stout is rich, roasty, full bodied, and sure to hit the spot on cool days. Last for the hop heads out there is the Bad Medicine Honey Double IPA offers a great bitter hoppy beer, with subtle sweetness of honey.
Of course this place is also a distillery and the spirits are worth all the awards they won. The Cabresto Canon Agave spirit is great on its own or in their version of a margarita. The Silver King Vodka is one of the most clean and crisp vodkas I have tried. The Mallette Bros. Gin is slightly sweet, and has a great juniper flavor. The Purkapile Rum is strong, sweet but very smooth. The best part is they offer spirit flights to sample a little of their offerings, as well as mixed drinks showcasing their spirits.
While this place is definitely a destination brewery, about 3 hours north of Albuquerque it is worth the visit. Whether doing a long weekend, or enjoying ski season Red River Brewing is a must visit. I know if I ever find myself up north again I will be back, the only difference is this time I’ll make sure to get some to go so I can
enjoy it down here.
