Casa Rondena

When I first moved down here and discovered the local wine scene there were a few aspects of it that surprised me. The first was how many wineries there are, and the other which I also enjoy is how close the wineries are to Albuquerque. The last is that without the Spanish wine production might not exist in New Mexico. So, in one of my favorite towns, Los Ranchos it was a pleasant surprise to me to not only find a beautiful winery, but one that make high quality Spanish styles wines. So, when I am in that area it is always on my list to stop by Casa Rondena Winery.

When you first drive up to this building it is amazing how beautiful it is. Guests drive right along the vineyards, and are greeted by a massive, beautiful Spanish style house. The outside alone is worth dozens of photos, but then step inside the tasting room and the beauty does not stop. The high ceilings are wood with beams, and the highlight is a massive chandelier that draws the eye up. In addition, there is a vintage wine press in the corner. If you feel like sitting inside there are large wooden tables, but of course there is the outdoor area. The outside area can only be described as relaxing with fountains, and a pond for guests to sit by. Also, there are tables that allow guests to enjoy their wine within the vineyard itself. To say it was relaxing enjoying a glass of wine and seeing the growth of the grapes is a truly unique experience. But enjoying the atmosphere is one thing, there is also a matter of the wine they serve.

The first time I went I opted for the tasting flight which was two each white and red wines, and all were very good and unique. The first white was the Shining River which was a blend of Riesling, Chenin Blanc, and a little bit of Gewurtztraminer. This was a very refreshing white perfect for these warm New Mexico days that was subtly sweet. It was very balanced, with a bright fruity taste that was unlike any wine that I have had. The other white I sampled was the Viognier. Unlike the Shining River this was not sweet at all, and more on the dry side. Still very refreshing, with a complex fruity flavor it is one that I would have again.

The red options were both rich, delicious, and everything I love about Spanish style wines. The La Copine is a lighter red blend that is very smooth, and not full of tannins. Very refreshing, this is a red wine that would taste great on a patio in the sun. The highlight of the tasting though for me was the 1629 blend. Named after when wine started getting produced in the New Mexico this is a blend of Tempranillo, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon that blends amazingly to create a rich, full-bodied wine. This wine is very rich, complex, slightly dry full of dark fruit flavors. Easily my favorite of the four I tried, and one I will have again and again. Also available is a rose, and Cabernet Franc, but not part of the tasting.

While there are several wineries in New Mexico that produce great wine, some have a great atmosphere, but Casa Rondena has everything. Beautiful scenery, a spacious tasting room for groups of all sizes, wines for fans of all styles, and a homage to the rich wine history of New Mexico. What’s even harder to believe is that this beautiful winery lies just outside Albuquerque where you feel you are in the countryside, not outside the city. This is a winery I will frequent time and time again, as well as recommend to anyone looking for a relaxing afternoon.
