New Mexico Bowl
Anybody
that knows me knows that I love college football, and that is especially true
when it comes to the bowl games. Usually, I just watch them on TV, but
thankfully now I am fortunate enough to live in a city that hosts a game. So as
soon as the games were announced this past year, I was more than excited to get
to attend my first New Mexico Bowl, but also my first college bowl game ever.
Even more lucky is that it featured a great game between BYU and SMU and was
moved to a night game.
In the
days leading up to the game the energy and excitement was already building.
From the arrival of the teams to the pep rally in Old Town Plaza fans were
flocking to Albuquerque to watch the 17th
edition of this bowl game and enjoy the festivities leading up to it. Of
course, come Saturday night it was all about the game at University Stadium.
Outside the stadium hot air balloons were on display along with other
activities to enjoy before the game. Despite the cold weather the excitement
from the fans was visible from the tailgating lot to inside the stadium.
After
the brief pregame ceremony including an amazing flyover, it was time for the
game to begin. While most bowl games tend to be one sided, this was a highly
competitive game from beginning to end. Both teams played with great intensity,
trading scores early creating a 10-10 halftime score. BYU came out strong in
the second half before and SMU comeback fell just short giving BYU a narrow
24-23 victory. As far as the crowd was concerned, even though the stadium was
only half full the energy from both fan bases was loud and intense, showing
just how great each of these school’s fan bases are.
At the
end of the day this was a great game, and a great showcase for the city of
Albuquerque. It was also a great way to kickoff Bowl season for college
football. This is something I would attend again, and in all honesty, it will
probably become a yearly tradition for me. I had no affiliation with either of
these schools and yet I had a great time. The fans were so energetic it was
hard not to cheer regardless, and it just goes to show how college football is
great for that reason. This is something to check out at least once, I’m glad I
did and look forward to next year already.
