Mariachi's Night

Spring is officially here, and for me that means one thing. Baseball is back, and I am already looking forward to all the Isotopes games I will get to attend this year. Last year I was lucky enough to get to see a lot of specialty games in person. Including a regular game, I was also luck enough to be there for Marvel night (even though the rain had other plans for it), Dukes retro night, and of course Green Chile Cheeseburger night. The only one missing was a Mariachi’s game. Well, thankfully in the first week of the season the first of six Mariachi’s games took place against the Salt Lake Bees (or for the night Las Abejas de Lago Saludo). Ticket in hand I made my way down to the stadium excited for what the night was going to bring.

Even before entering the stadium the excitement from the crowd was visible, and one of the larger crowds of the early season. The festivities also began before the gates even opened as guests were treated to live mariachi music, and traditional folklore dancers. It was a great way to pass the time waiting to get in, and seeing these performers up close and in person in their vibrant costumes shows the level of talent, and effort they put into their performances. Once inside the stadium the festivities continued with dancers, musicians, and singers spread out throughout the concourse for fans to enjoy while waiting for the game to start.

Once the game started the Isotopes transformed and took the field in their great black and teal Mariachi’s uniforms, and even the Bees transformed for the night and wore Hispanic inspired jerseys as well. Once the game started, I thought that was going to be it for the festivities, but I am glad I was wrong. In between innings each group got a chance to perform on the field in front of first base, in front of a very large crowd. While all the performers were great and entertaining to watch, the best of the night for me was Ballet Folklorico out of Santa Fe. Their costumes were vibrant and beautiful, and their dance was well choreographed and very entertaining.

Other than the baseball game itself, one thing I truly love about going to Isotopes games is that they make their special nights about more than baseball. This is a team that embraces New Mexico history and culture and bring that experience to the fans whenever they can. I never imagined that I would get to go to a baseball game, and at the same time be treated to classic folklore dancing, and traditional mariachi music. This is nothing I would have gotten to experience anywhere else. In addition, the crowd that came out was one of the more energetic I have seen at any Isotopes game I have gone to. To top off what was a great evening was with an Albuquerque win. Looking at the schedule for the rest of the season I can say with confidence that more Mariachi’s games will be on my list of ones to go to.
